How Does Car Data Check Work?

Enter the registration number of the car you are looking to buy and receive a free confirmation of the make, model and colour.

Once you have decided whether to buy one Car Data Check or up to five Car Data Checks, follow our simple steps to check the car of your dreams.

Step 1

Tell us the VIN and mileage at this point. An accurate mileage can help to highlight a mileage anomaly. You can return to the site at any time to confirm the VIN if you don't have it now. Enter your email address and a memorable password of at least 8 characters.

Step 2

Buy your AA Car Data Check with your credit or debit card. If you have a promotion code which may entitle you to a discount, please enter it at this stage and verify it to ensure you pay the correct amount. No refunds will be made for unclaimed discounts. Once you have paid for five Car Data Checks, you will have up to 60 days to use your remaining checks.

Step 3

You will get the results instantly. If you have any queries about data returned on your report, refer to our Useful Information pages or e-mail us at aacardatacheck@uk.experian.com .

Step 4

Before you buy the vehicle, read our Help & Advice page and print off the check list. AA Car Data Check can help you make an informed decision, but cannot protect you from every eventuality; by following our advice you will know some of the things to look out for.

Step 5

Confirm the VIN if you have not already done so, before you buy it. The VIN is unique to each vehicle and is one way of checking that its identity has not been changed fraudulently. It can be found on the V5C and in various places on the car itself. It is advisable to check the VIN in more than two places on the car. If you are unsure where to look, contact your local garage, they should be able to tell you.

Step 6

After you've bought the car, don't forget to return to the site to register your AA Car Data Check Insurance. This policy will cover you for specific financial loss due to the data supplied being incorrect or incomplete. Once you have registered the insurance your Five Car Check will expire, and any unused checks will be lost.

You can return to the site at any time and log in using your e-mail address and password. Just click on 'View My Checks' and you will be able to see all the checks you have already, or you can click 'Check A Vehicle' to access further checks.

The results of the AA Car Data Check will appear on screen and will be stored under your login for a period of 27 months.
